Wolf Administration Tours World’s Largest Color and Coatings R&D Center in Philadelphia
Philadelphia, PA – Today, Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) Secretary Dennis Davin toured Axalta Coating Systems, LLC, a global developer and supplier of coatings and application tools, to tour its research and development facility, Global Innovation Center. In 2015, Governor Tom Wolf announced that Axalta would establish that facility at the Philadelphia Navy Yard, creating nearly 200 new full-time jobs.
“Pennsylvania—and especially Philadelphia—is made better by the powerhouse industries and innovative companies like Axalta that call it home, which only increases our competitive advantage,” said Sec. Davin. “The Global Innovation Center employs the best and brightest to develop the technologies and products of the future, benefiting both the industry and the commonwealth for years to come.”
Axalta received a funding proposal from the Department of Community and Economic Development that included a $400,000 Pennsylvania First Program grant. In exchange, Axalta agreed to invest at least $47 million at the site, and to create at least 190 new, high-paying jobs at the site. The project was led by the Governor’s Action Team, an experienced group of economic development professionals who report directly to the governor and work with businesses that are considering locating or expanding in Pennsylvania.
The 175,000-foot Global Innovation Center employs engineers, scientists and technicians, and serves as the central hub for Axalta’s global network of technology centers, which are focused on innovative research, product development and technology initiatives that benefit the coatings industry. The facility is the largest of its kind in the world.
“What we’re doing at the Global Innovation Center is really special – we’re innovating in Philadelphia and delivering new products that provide solutions for our customers all around the world,” said Robert Roop, Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, Axalta. “Thanks to our employees and the world-class facilities at Axalta’s Global Innovation Center, we continue to deliver new and innovative solutions that protect and beautify everything from cars and bridges to football helmets and home appliances. Philadelphia’s Navy Yard is the perfect home for our lab as we are situated amongst other leading technology companies and are able to recruit high-quality talent from some of the best universities in the world.”
Axalta is a leading global developer, manufacturer, marketer and distributor of innovative, high performance coatings for the automotive and industrial transportation industries as well as industrial customers such as manufacturers of electrical insulation systems and machined metal.
