Governor Wolf Announces New SUPERVALU Facility in Dauphin County, Creating Approximately 350 Jobs
Harrisburg, PA – Governor Tom Wolf announced today that SUPERVALU Inc., the largest public company grocery wholesaler in the United States, has selected the City of Harrisburg, Dauphin County, for its new facility, a move that will create at least 350 new jobs.
“Any time a large employer like SUPERVALU chooses to expand in Pennsylvania, not only is it fantastic news for our workers, but it’s more evidence that Pennsylvania has the workforce and business climate that makes companies want to grow here,” Governor Wolf said. “My administration is looking forward to building on our efforts to support our business climate in the years ahead so companies like SUPERVALU can continue to thrive. I applaud SUPERVALU for choosing to expand in the commonwealth.”
Pennsylvania is the prime location for business growth and is within a day’s drive of nearly 40 percent of the U.S. population and 60 percent of the Canadian population, four of the 10 largest U.S. markets, and 40 percent of all U.S. manufacturers. To better serve its customers in the northeast United States, SUPERVALU purchased and renovated a 750,000-square-foot warehouse distribution facility earlier this year. The company has committed to creating approximately 350 jobs in the area over the next three years and will invest approximately $69 million of its own in the project.
“Harrisburg is a terrific geographic center for serving our wholesale customers in the Northeast,” said Mark Gross, president and CEO of SUPERVALU. “We are very appreciative of the support and financial commitments from the Governor’s Action Team in helping us bring our business and jobs to the area. SUPERVALU is committed to growth and we are thrilled to be a part of the Harrisburg community and the great state of Pennsylvania.”
SUPERVALU received a funding proposal from the Department of Community and Economic Development that includes a $740,000 Pennsylvania First grant and $166,500 in WEDnetPA funding for employee training. The project was coordinated by Governor’s Action Team, an experienced group of economic development professionals who report directly to the governor and work with businesses that are considering locating or expanding in Pennsylvania.
SUPERVALU INC. (NYSE: SVU) is one of the largest grocery wholesalers and retailers in the U.S. with annual sales of approximately $16 billion. SUPERVALU serves customers across the United States through a network of 3,324 stores composed of 3,111 wholesale primary stores operated by customers serviced by SUPERVALU’s food distribution business and 213 traditional retail grocery stores operated under five retail banners in six geographic regions (store counts as of December 2, 2017).
