More than 600 Students to Participate in The Governor’s Pennsylvania STEM Competition Regional Tournaments

Harrisburg – Beginning Monday, Feb. 2, more than 600 students, representing more than 120 schools, will participate in The Governor’s Pennsylvania STEM Competition regional tournaments. A total of 21 tournaments will be hosted by Pennsylvania’s Intermediate Units and held throughout the month of February 2015. The tournaments represent the next stage in the inaugural competition, which was launched in September and exposes teams of students in grades nine through 12 to the diverse science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) employment opportunities that exist in their communities. Winners from each regional competition will advance to the state tournament on May 29, 2015, at Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology, in Lancaster.

Student participants in the regional tournaments will be evaluated on research and work they have conducted since October to design and build a device or project that is capable of making the quality of life better for citizens of Pennsylvania. As part of the competition’s building requirement, teams were challenged to create a prototype capable of accomplishing a series of practical tasks that can be translated into real-life needs. Students worked under the guidance of a teacher-mentor and engaged with their local community to learn about STEM related careers and the skills necessary to be successful in those careers. Supported by their findings, students will make a series of presentations at the regional tournaments and provide a hands-on demonstration of the practical applications of their device. All work related to the competition will be evaluated by a panel of judges consisting of Intermediate Unit representatives, STEM educators and members of the business community.

“The Governor’s Pennsylvania STEM Competition serves as an excellent learning opportunity for students to utilize the essential 21st century skills sought by employers and the community,” said Acting Secretary of Education Pedro Rivera. “By designing a competition that challenges students to research and solve real-world challenges, and explore the STEM opportunities in their community, we are creating an environment that prepares our best and brightest young minds to become the leaders of Pennsylvania’s future.”
